Environmental Audits and Assesment Division

The functions of the Environmental Assessments and Audits Division are:

  • The primary function or role of the Division is to implement and enforce the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Act, No. 6 of 2005 which came into effect on 27th May 2005.
  • Ensure that policies, programmes, plans and development projects be accompanied by professionally prepared and approved Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) before implementation by providing objective and impartial environmental assessment services in compliance with the requirements specified in the EIA legislation.
  • Develop a comprehensive database on the environment for the information of public;
  • Prepare and update manuals and sectoral EIA guidelines for the preparation of EIA and SEAs.
  • Undertake Environmental Audits in accordance with the EIA legislation through the monitoring of the implementation of approved Environmental Impact Statements (EIS).
  • Provide professional advice to Central Government, Local Authorities and the public on the preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments.
